    § 01 — About
    A Defining Moment for Nepal

    Care that no longer
    travels abroad.

For the first time, Birat Medical College Teaching Hospital brings clinicians and specialists together around a single shared objective: to strengthen nuclear medicine and integrated oncology services within Nepal — and to keep patients close to home.

With increasing demand for advanced diagnostic and therapeutic care, nuclear medicine is becoming essential in modern clinical practice. For too long, Nepali patients requiring iodine therapy and advanced molecular imaging have travelled across the border for care that should be available within their own country.

This conference focuses on the professionals who guide patient decisions — physicians, surgeons, and specialists — and explores how imaging and therapy can be better integrated into everyday clinical pathways. With a particular emphasis on referral systems, multi-specialty integration, and the role of nuclear medicine in oncology, cardiology, and endocrinology.

This is not just a conference. It represents a step toward building accessible, high-quality nuclear medicine services within Nepal — reducing the need to travel abroad for advanced care.

    § 02 — Objectives

    § 04 — Programme

    Two days,
    one trajectory.

Day One establishes capability — what’s now possible at BMCTH, anchored around the Iodine Therapy Launch. Day Two turns to application — how it changes patient care, and how the system around it (referrals, multi-specialty collaboration) needs to evolve. Detailed session times will be confirmed shortly.

Note: Session times below are indicative anchors — the Iodine Therapy Launch and Clinical Collaboration Initiative are confirmed; remaining sessions are marked TBC and will be finalised by the scientific committee in the coming weeks.

    § 05 — Flagship Moment I
    The Therapeutic Turn

    From detection
    to definitive
    treatment.

On Day One, BMCTH formally inaugurates Iodine-131 therapy services — a milestone that transforms our Department of Nuclear Medicine from a purely diagnostic facility into a complete molecular medicine programme. For the first time in eastern Nepal, patients with thyroid cancers and disorders can be diagnosed, treated, and followed up in one institution.

It marks a significant step in delivering complete nuclear medicine care — from detection to definitive treatment — and meaningfully reduces the long-standing dependency on cross-border travel for advanced therapy.

    What this enables

    BMCTH Iodine Therapy Suite

    • Treatment of thyroid cancers and disorders
    • Integration of imaging and therapy within one institution
    • Reduced dependency on cross-border treatment
    • Improved accessibility for patients within Nepal
    • End-to-end nuclear medicine pathway — detection to definitive treatment
    collaboration
    § 06 — Flagship Moment II
    A Structured Framework
    Day Two Flagship Institutional

    Strengthening
    clinical
    collaboration.

As part of the conference, BMCTH will initiate a structured approach to clinical collaboration aimed at improving patient care and referral systems across Nepal. Less a declaration than an institutional commitment — practical, near-term, and measurable.

    i.
    Standardizing referral practices
Common indications, timing, and communication protocols for patient referrals into nuclear medicine — across departments and partner institutions.
    ii.
    Knowledge sharing between institutions
Cross-institutional case discussions, journal clubs, and shared learning forums between BMCTH and partner hospitals.
    iii.
    Clinical training & exposure opportunities
Short-term clinical observerships and structured exposure for clinicians from partner institutions to BMCTH’s nuclear medicine suite.
    iv.
    Strengthening multidisciplinary care
Joint tumour boards, multi-specialty case conferences, and integrated care pathways that span oncology, endocrinology, cardiology and internal medicine.
