Overview

The Department of Critical Care Medicine at Birat Medical College Teaching Hospital cares for the most seriously ill patients in the hospital. Our Intensive Care Units provide advanced life support, continuous monitoring and close nursing care for adults with life-threatening illness, newborns who need intensive care, and patients recovering from major surgery. Common reasons for admission include severe infections and sepsis, breathing failure, shock, serious injuries, poisoning, and complications of heart, kidney, liver or neurological disease.

Critical care is teamwork. ICU doctors and nurses work around the clock with surgeons, physicians, cardiologists, paediatricians and other specialists of this Kathmandu University affiliated teaching hospital. Patients have bedside access to portable X-ray and ultrasound, with CT and MRI close at hand, along with rapid laboratory testing and the hospital blood bank for blood components. Many patients arrive from the 24-hour Emergency or the operating theatres, and the unit works closely with the Coronary Care Unit for heart patients.

We understand that having a loved one in intensive care is stressful. Our team keeps families informed, explains the treatment plan and answers questions with honesty and compassion. BMCTH accepts Government Health Insurance, the Social Security Fund (SSF), the Bipanna Nagarik treatment fund for eligible serious illnesses, and the Safe Motherhood Program. Patients needing intensive care usually reach us through the Emergency, which is open 24 hours a day, every day. For emergencies, call 021-422601, and for general enquiries, 021-422601 or 423182.
