Overview
Welcome to the Department of Dermatology, Venereology and Leprology at Birat Medical College Teaching Hospital. With a long record of patient care since the hospital opened in 2014, the department provides comprehensive and compassionate care for conditions of the skin, hair and nails. Our team treats everything from common problems such as acne, eczema, fungal infections and psoriasis to pigmentation disorders like melasma and vitiligo, allergic skin reactions and drug reactions, while upholding high standards in dermatological, venereological and leprological practice.
Care is organised through dedicated clinics: a General Skin Clinic, a Leprosy Clinic, a confidential STD Clinic and a Cosmetic Clinic. Alongside consultation, the department performs procedures such as biopsies, cautery, cryotherapy, excision of moles and cysts, intralesional injections, phototherapy and laser treatments. As part of a Kathmandu University affiliated teaching hospital, our consultants also teach, and they work closely with the hospital laboratory for skin biopsies and tests, and with other specialties when a skin problem is linked to a wider health condition.
We aim to make every visit comfortable and private, especially for sensitive concerns such as sexually transmitted infections and leprosy. BMCTH accepts Government Health Insurance, the Social Security Fund (SSF) and other national coverage programs. The outpatient department is open Sunday to Friday, 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. To book or ask a question, call 021-422601 or 423182, or simply register at the hospital on the day of your visit.

Common questions
See us if a rash, itch, acne, hair loss or patch of skin does not improve after a couple of weeks, keeps coming back, or affects your daily life. A mole that changes in size, shape or colour, or a sore that does not heal, should also be checked. A rapidly spreading rash with fever, blistering, peeling skin or swelling of the lips or eyes after a new medicine needs urgent care in our 24-hour Emergency.
Yes. Consultations at our STD and Leprosy clinics are handled privately and professionally. You can speak openly with the doctor, and your information is kept confidential.
Bring any previous prescriptions, creams or medicines you have used, along with earlier test reports. If possible, avoid applying make-up or creams to the affected area on the day of your visit so the doctor can examine the skin clearly.
BMCTH accepts Government Health Insurance, the Social Security Fund (SSF), the Bipanna Nagarik treatment fund for eligible serious illnesses, and the Safe Motherhood Program. Please bring your insurance card or SSF details, a valid ID and any referral letter, and our registration desk will guide you on what applies to your visit. Cosmetic procedures may not be covered by insurance schemes, so please check at the desk before treatment.
The outpatient department (OPD) runs Sunday to Friday, 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, and you can register at the hospital on the day of your visit. For enquiries, call 021-422601 or 423182.
