Overview
Endocrinology is the branch of medicine that deals with hormones and the glands that produce them. Hormones regulate critical functions in the body, including growth, metabolism, reproduction and mood, so even a small imbalance can affect how a person feels every day. At Birat Medical College Teaching Hospital, our Endocrinology department offers expert diagnosis, treatment and long-term management of endocrine disorders, most commonly diabetes and thyroid disease, as well as problems of the pituitary, adrenal glands, bones and reproductive hormones, helping patients lead healthier lives.
Many hormonal conditions affect several parts of the body, so care at BMCTH is closely coordinated across our Kathmandu University affiliated teaching hospital. Our laboratory provides blood sugar, HbA1c, thyroid and other hormone tests, while ultrasound helps assess thyroid swellings and 1.5 Tesla MRI and CT imaging can be used to look at the pituitary and adrenal glands. Endocrinologists work with ophthalmology for diabetic eye checks, nephrology for kidney health, cardiology, general surgery and obstetrics, so that patients with diabetes in pregnancy, thyroid nodules or complications receive joined-up care.
Living with a long-term hormonal condition is easier with good information and regular support. Our team explains each diagnosis clearly and helps patients understand their medicines, insulin use, diet and follow-up tests. BMCTH accepts Government Health Insurance and the Social Security Fund (SSF), and our in-house pharmacy offers medication counselling. The Endocrinology OPD is open Sunday to Friday, 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, and our 24-hour Emergency department is always available for urgent problems such as very high or very low blood sugar.

All doctorsCommon questions
Consider seeing an endocrinologist if you have diabetes that is hard to control, a swelling in the neck, unexplained weight gain or loss, constant tiredness, irregular periods or excess hair growth, or if a test has shown abnormal hormone levels. Your doctor may also refer you for specialist review.
Very low blood sugar can cause sweating, shaking, confusion or fainting, while very high sugar may cause extreme thirst, vomiting, rapid breathing and drowsiness. These need urgent care at our 24-hour Emergency department; call 021-422601.
Bring your recent blood sugar records or glucometer, previous test reports such as HbA1c and thyroid tests, prescriptions and all the medicines or insulin you use. Ask your doctor in advance whether you need to come fasting for blood tests.
BMCTH accepts Government Health Insurance and the Social Security Fund (SSF). What is covered depends on your scheme, so our registration staff can help you check before tests and treatment.
The Endocrinology OPD is open Sunday to Friday, 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. Register at the hospital on the day of your visit, or call 021-422601 or 021-423182 for information.
