Overview
The Gastroenterology department at Birat Medical College Teaching Hospital cares for conditions of the digestive system, including the food pipe, stomach, intestines, liver, gallbladder and pancreas. Our specialists see patients with acidity and ulcers, persistent abdominal pain, diarrhoea or constipation, jaundice, hepatitis, fatty liver and cirrhosis, pancreatitis and bleeding from the gut. We combine careful clinical assessment with the right investigations to find the cause of symptoms, and we explain each step so patients feel informed and supported.
Digestive and liver diseases often need input from several teams, and our Kathmandu University affiliated teaching hospital brings them together. Ultrasound, a 512-slice CT scanner, 1.5 Tesla MRI and interventional radiology, including TACE for selected liver tumours, support accurate diagnosis and treatment. Our laboratory provides liver function, hepatitis and stool testing, and the blood bank supports patients with gastrointestinal bleeding. Gastroenterologists work alongside general surgery, which offers open and laparoscopic operations, and the Birat Cancer Institute for digestive cancers, with Intensive Care Units available for seriously ill patients.
We want patients and families to find care simple and affordable. BMCTH accepts Government Health Insurance and the Social Security Fund (SSF), and the Bipanna Nagarik fund may support eligible patients with serious illnesses such as cancer. Our in-house pharmacy supplies medicines with clear counselling. The Gastroenterology OPD is open Sunday to Friday, 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, and our Emergency department is open 24 hours a day for urgent problems such as vomiting blood, black stools or severe abdominal pain.

Common questions
See a gastroenterologist if you have acidity or abdominal pain that keeps coming back, difficulty swallowing, ongoing diarrhoea or constipation, unexplained weight loss, yellowing of the eyes or skin, or blood in your stool. A check-up can find the cause and the right treatment.
