Overview
The Internal Medicine department at Birat Medical College Teaching Hospital is often the first point of specialist care for adults. Our physicians diagnose and treat a wide range of illnesses, including fevers and infections such as typhoid, dengue and tuberculosis, high blood pressure, diabetes, anaemia, thyroid problems and chronic conditions that affect several organs at once. We look at the whole person rather than a single symptom, and we guide patients through tests, treatment and follow-up with clear explanations at every step.
Being part of a Kathmandu University affiliated teaching hospital means our physicians work closely with specialists across 30 clinical departments, including cardiology, nephrology, gastroenterology, neurology and pulmonology. Our laboratory offers biochemistry, haematology, microbiology and pathology testing, while imaging includes ultrasound, digital X-ray, a 512-slice CT scanner and 1.5 Tesla MRI. Patients who become seriously unwell can be admitted to general wards or cabins, or to our Intensive Care Units with advanced life support, and the 24-hour Emergency department ensures urgent medical problems are seen at any time.
We believe good medical care should be within reach of every family. BMCTH accepts Government Health Insurance and the Social Security Fund (SSF), and the Bipanna Nagarik fund may support eligible patients with serious illnesses such as kidney disease, heart disease and cancer. Our in-house pharmacy provides medicines with counselling on how to take them safely. The Medicine OPD is open Sunday to Friday, 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, with Emergency services available 24 hours a day, every day.
