Overview
The Nephrology department at Birat Medical College Teaching Hospital provides specialist care for people with kidney disease. Our nephrologists diagnose and manage sudden kidney injury, chronic kidney disease, kidney damage caused by diabetes and high blood pressure, protein leakage in the urine, swelling of the body, electrolyte imbalances and kidney infections. Because kidney disease often develops quietly, we focus on early detection, slowing progression and helping patients understand their condition, their medicines and the choices available if kidney function declines.
Kidney care at BMCTH draws on the strengths of a Kathmandu University affiliated multispecialty teaching hospital. Our laboratory provides kidney function, electrolyte and urine testing, with pathology support where a kidney biopsy is needed, and ultrasound, CT and MRI help assess kidney size and structure. Nephrologists work closely with internal medicine, endocrinology, cardiology and urology, as many kidney problems are linked to diabetes, heart disease or blockages. Patients who become seriously unwell can be treated in our Intensive Care Units with advanced life support.
Kidney disease is a long journey, and we aim to support patients and families every step of the way. BMCTH accepts Government Health Insurance and the Social Security Fund (SSF), and the Bipanna Nagarik fund may support eligible patients with serious kidney disease. Our in-house pharmacy provides medicines with careful counselling, which is especially important when kidney function is reduced. The Nephrology OPD is open Sunday to Friday, 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, and our Emergency department is open 24 hours a day.

All doctorsCommon questions
See a nephrologist if blood tests show reduced kidney function, if there is protein or blood in your urine, if you have swelling of the face or legs, or if you have long-standing diabetes or high blood pressure with abnormal kidney tests. Early care can help slow kidney damage.
