Overview
The Neurology department at Birat Medical College Teaching Hospital cares for people with disorders of the brain, spinal cord, nerves and muscles. Our neurologists diagnose and treat stroke, epilepsy and seizures, migraine and other headaches, Parkinson's disease and movement disorders, memory problems, nerve pain and numbness, muscle weakness and infections of the brain. Neurological symptoms can be worrying, so we take time to listen, examine carefully and explain the diagnosis and treatment in plain language for patients and their families.
Accurate neurological diagnosis relies on good imaging and testing, and BMCTH brings these together under one roof. Our 1.5 Tesla MRI, with diffusion-weighted and diffusion tensor imaging, and a 512-slice CT scanner help assess stroke, tumours and other brain and spine conditions. The laboratory supports blood and cerebrospinal fluid testing. As a Kathmandu University affiliated teaching hospital, our neurologists work with neurosurgery, internal medicine, physiotherapy and the 24-hour Emergency department, and patients with severe illness can be cared for in our Intensive Care Units with advanced life support.
Many neurological conditions need long-term care, and we aim to support patients well beyond the first visit. BMCTH accepts Government Health Insurance and the Social Security Fund (SSF), and our in-house pharmacy offers counselling on medicines such as anti-seizure drugs, which must be taken regularly. The Neurology OPD is open Sunday to Friday, 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. If you notice sudden signs of stroke or a prolonged seizure, come directly to our Emergency department, which is open 24 hours a day.

All doctorsCommon questions
See a neurologist if you have frequent or severe headaches, seizures or fainting episodes, numbness or tingling, tremor, unsteady walking, memory problems or weakness that does not go away. Your doctor may also refer you after a stroke or abnormal brain scan.
Sudden face drooping, weakness of an arm or leg, slurred speech, loss of vision or sudden severe headache can be signs of stroke. Come to our 24-hour Emergency department immediately, as early treatment matters. Call 021-422601 for emergencies.
Keep them safe from injury, turn them on their side and do not put anything in their mouth. Seek emergency care if the seizure lasts more than five minutes, repeats without recovery, or happens for the first time.
BMCTH accepts Government Health Insurance and the Social Security Fund (SSF). Coverage of tests such as MRI depends on your scheme, so our registration staff can help you check.
The Neurology OPD is open Sunday to Friday, 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. Bring previous CT or MRI scans and reports, prescriptions and, if possible, a family member who has seen your symptoms, or call 021-422601 or 021-423182 for information.
