Overview

The Department of Nutrition and Dietetics at Birat Medical College Teaching Hospital helps patients use food as part of their treatment and recovery. Our dietitians assess each person's health, eating habits, weight and test results, and create practical meal plans that suit local foods, family routines and budgets. We support people living with diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, kidney and liver conditions, obesity and malnutrition, as well as pregnant and breastfeeding mothers, growing children and older adults.

Nutrition is an important part of care across the hospital. Dietitians work with physicians, surgeons, cardiologists, paediatricians, obstetricians, the Birat Cancer Institute and the Intensive Care Units in this Kathmandu University affiliated teaching hospital. For admitted patients, we help plan suitable diets in the wards and advise on tube or special feeding when a patient cannot eat normally. Laboratory results from the hospital's biochemistry services, such as blood sugar and cholesterol, help us track progress and adjust plans.

Small, steady changes to what you eat can make a real difference to your health. Bring your recent reports, a list of medicines and, if possible, a family member who cooks at home. BMCTH accepts Government Health Insurance, the Social Security Fund (SSF) and other national coverage programs. The outpatient department is open Sunday to Friday, 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. To book, call 021-422601 or 423182, or ask your BMCTH doctor to refer you.
