Overview
The Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Birat Medical College Teaching Hospital cares for women at every stage of life. Our obstetricians look after mothers through pregnancy, labour and the weeks after birth, while our gynaecologists diagnose and treat conditions of the uterus, ovaries and pelvis, from menstrual problems and infertility concerns to menopause and gynaecological cancers. We aim to give every woman respectful, private and clear care, and to make sure mothers and babies leave hospital healthy.
As a multispecialty teaching hospital affiliated to Kathmandu University, we work closely with paediatrics for newborn care, anaesthesiology for safe delivery and surgery, and our 24-hour Emergency for urgent pregnancy problems. Ultrasound, mammography, laboratory and blood bank services are all on campus, and women with serious illness can be supported by our intensive care units. Patients with gynaecological cancers are cared for together with the Birat Cancer Institute, and our consultants also teach, keeping our practice current.
BMCTH takes part in the government's Safe Motherhood Program, and also accepts Government Health Insurance and the Social Security Fund (SSF). Please start antenatal visits early in pregnancy and bring your antenatal card to every visit, so we can follow you and your baby closely. To book, visit OPD Sunday to Friday, 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, or call 021-422601 or 423182. For bleeding, severe pain or reduced baby movements, come to Emergency at any time.

It is best to see us as soon as you know you are pregnant, ideally in the first three months. Early visits allow us to confirm the pregnancy, check your health, start supplements and plan the rest of your care.
