Overview
The Department of Pathology at Birat Medical College Teaching Hospital provides the laboratory diagnosis that sits behind nearly every treatment decision in the hospital. From a routine blood count to a biopsy that confirms a cancer diagnosis, our pathologists and laboratory teams examine blood, urine, body fluids and tissue samples to help doctors identify disease, plan treatment and monitor progress. Laboratory medicine at BMCTH covers biochemistry, haematology, microbiology, pathology and molecular and genetic testing.
Pathology works hand in hand with every clinical department, from the 24-hour Emergency and Intensive Care Units to surgery, medicine and the Birat Cancer Institute. Tissue reports support cancer diagnosis and treatment planning, and the department also connects with the hospital blood bank for transfusion needs. As part of a Kathmandu University affiliated teaching hospital, our consultants also teach medical students and trainees, which keeps practice grounded in current standards and careful quality checks.
Patients can have samples collected for tests requested by BMCTH doctors or brought from outside on a doctor's prescription. Our staff will tell you about any preparation, such as fasting, and when your report will be ready, so you know exactly what to expect. BMCTH accepts Government Health Insurance, the Social Security Fund (SSF) and other national coverage programs. For enquiries, call 021-422601 or 423182 during outpatient hours, Sunday to Friday, 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.

Common questions
Some tests, such as fasting blood sugar and lipid profile, usually need 8 to 12 hours without food, though you may drink plain water. Many other tests do not need fasting. Check with your doctor or our laboratory staff when your test is ordered.
Tests are usually done on a doctor's request, so please bring the prescription or referral from your doctor, including one from another hospital or clinic. This ensures the right tests are done and the results are interpreted correctly.
Many routine blood and urine reports are available the same day, while cultures, biopsies and specialised tests take longer. Staff will tell you the expected collection time when your sample is taken.
BMCTH accepts Government Health Insurance, the Social Security Fund (SSF), the Bipanna Nagarik treatment fund for eligible serious illnesses, and the Safe Motherhood Program. Please bring your insurance card or SSF details, a valid ID and any referral letter, and our registration desk will guide you on what applies to your visit.
Bring your doctor's request form or prescription, your hospital registration or ID, and your insurance or SSF details if applicable. Tell staff if you take blood-thinning medicines or have a condition such as diabetes that may affect fasting.
