Overview

The Plastic Surgery department at Birat Medical College Teaching Hospital focuses on restoring both function and appearance. Our surgeons care for patients with burns and burn scars, hand and soft-tissue injuries, wounds that are slow to heal, birth differences such as cleft lip and palate, and defects left after the removal of skin lumps or tumours. Reconstructive surgery can help people move, work and live with more confidence, and we take time to discuss realistic goals, the steps involved and the recovery ahead before any procedure.

Plastic surgery at BMCTH works hand in hand with other departments of our Kathmandu University affiliated teaching hospital. Surgeons coordinate with general surgery, orthopaedics, ENT and the Birat Cancer Institute for patients who need reconstruction after injury or cancer treatment. Our 24-hour Emergency department receives acute burns and injuries, while the laboratory, blood bank and imaging services support safe planning for surgery. Patients recovering from major burns or complex operations can be monitored in our Intensive Care Units, with dressing care and physiotherapy continuing on the wards.

Healing from burns and reconstructive surgery can take time, and we support patients and families throughout. BMCTH accepts Government Health Insurance and the Social Security Fund (SSF), and eligible patients with serious illnesses such as cancer may receive support through the Bipanna Nagarik fund. Our in-house pharmacy provides medicines and advice on wound care. The Plastic Surgery OPD is open Sunday to Friday, 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, and for fresh burns or serious wounds you can come directly to Emergency at any hour.
