Overview
The Pulmonology department at Birat Medical College Teaching Hospital cares for people with diseases of the lungs and airways. Our chest physicians diagnose and treat asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), pneumonia, tuberculosis, bronchiectasis, interstitial lung disease, fluid around the lungs and long-lasting cough or breathlessness. With air pollution, smoking and indoor smoke from cooking fuel common in the region, lung problems affect many families, and we work to help patients breathe more easily and stay active.
Chest care at BMCTH is supported by the facilities of a Kathmandu University affiliated teaching hospital. Digital X-ray and our 512-slice CT scanner allow detailed imaging of the lungs, while the laboratory offers microbiology and pathology testing, including sputum tests for tuberculosis and other infections. Our pulmonologists work with internal medicine, cardiology and the Birat Cancer Institute for patients with lung cancer. Patients with severe breathing problems can be treated in our Intensive Care Units with advanced life support, and the Emergency department provides urgent care around the clock.
Long-term lung conditions are best managed with good education and regular follow-up. Our team teaches correct inhaler technique, explains each treatment and supports patients who want to quit smoking. BMCTH accepts Government Health Insurance and the Social Security Fund (SSF), and the Bipanna Nagarik fund may support eligible patients with serious illnesses such as cancer. The Pulmonology OPD is open Sunday to Friday, 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, and our Emergency department is open 24 hours a day for sudden severe breathlessness.
