Overview
The Urology department at Birat Medical College Teaching Hospital diagnoses and treats conditions of the urinary tract in men and women and of the male reproductive system. Our urologists care for patients with kidney and ureteric stones, prostate enlargement, urinary infections that keep returning, blood in the urine, difficulty passing urine and urological cancers. We take time to explain each condition and the available options, from medicines and lifestyle advice to endoscopic procedures and open surgery, so patients can make confident decisions about their care.
Urological care at BMCTH is supported by the wider resources of a multispecialty teaching hospital affiliated to Kathmandu University. Ultrasound, digital X-ray, a 512-slice CT scanner and 1.5 Tesla MRI help locate stones, assess the prostate and stage tumours accurately. Our laboratory provides urine, blood and pathology testing, while patients with kidney, bladder or prostate cancer can be reviewed with the Birat Cancer Institute. Urologists work closely with nephrology, general surgery, anaesthesia and our Intensive Care Units, so complex cases receive coordinated care.
We aim to make care accessible to families across eastern Nepal. BMCTH accepts Government Health Insurance and the Social Security Fund (SSF), and the Bipanna Nagarik fund may support eligible patients with serious illnesses such as cancer and kidney disease. Our in-house pharmacy supplies medicines with clear counselling. The Urology OPD is open Sunday to Friday, 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, and our Emergency department is available 24 hours a day for sudden severe pain, inability to pass urine or heavy bleeding.

Common questions
See a urologist if you have pain in the side or back that comes in waves, blood in your urine, burning or frequent urination that keeps returning, a weak urine stream or difficulty passing urine, or a swelling in the scrotum. Older men who wake often at night to pass urine should also have their prostate checked.
Come to our 24-hour Emergency department if you cannot pass urine at all, have severe side pain with fever or vomiting, heavy bleeding in the urine with clots, or sudden severe pain in a testis. The emergency line is 021-422601.
Bring previous ultrasound, X-ray or CT reports, urine and blood test results, prescriptions and a list of current medicines. If you have passed a stone, bringing it can help the team understand its type.
BMCTH accepts Government Health Insurance and the Social Security Fund (SSF). Patients with serious illnesses such as kidney disease or cancer may be eligible for support through the Bipanna Nagarik fund. Our registration staff can help you check what your scheme covers.
