NEPAL HEALTH INSURANCE PROGRAM
INTRODUCTION
As a registered provider under Nepal’s Health Insurance Program (HIP), Birat Medical College Teaching Hospital (BMCTH) delivers essential healthcare services aligned with the government’s mission for Universal Health Coverage (UHC). However, a recent change requires insured patients to pay 20% of their treatment cost as co-payment, with the remaining 80% covered by the insurance.

Services and Benefits for Insured Patients
- As per the new rule, insured patients must now pay 20% of the total treatment cost out-of-pocket, while 80% is borne by the insurance.
- This policy helps sustain the program by sharing costs between the government and service users.
- Families of up to five members receive coverage of NPR 100,000 annually.
- For additional family members, NPR 20,000 per person is added, with a maximum annual benefit of NPR 200,000.
- Vulnerable groups, such as those with HIV/AIDS, MDR-TB, leprosy, and individuals with disabilities, are supported by the government, which covers their premium.
- Citizens aged 70 years or older receive free premium coverage from the government.
- Households identified as ultra-poor or holding poverty identity cards or red cards are exempt from premium payments.
